New EC*REACH Publication: The Shifting Demographics of Chicago’s Young Children
In this memo, the EC*REACH team presents trends in the population of young children in Chicago over time, population trends among young children by Chicago region and community area, changes in the population of Chicago’s young children by community area, and characteristics of Chicago families with children birth to five.
Despite stability in the city’s population overall, Chicago has seen a substantial decline in the population of young children. One-third of Chicago’s young children live in just eleven community areas, many of which face resource challenges. At the same time, higher-resource areas like the Central region of the city have undergone growth in their young child populations. Across Chicago, families with young children have higher socioeconomic status in 2023 than they had in 2010. Poverty rates are lower, parental employment rates are higher, and more young children are enrolled in school.
